Westerland Netherlands

Protestantse Kerk in Nederland (Reformed)

Westerland is a village on the former island of Wieringen, between the Waddenzee and the Zuiderzee (the land is now reclaimed). In 1828 this building replaced a earlier Romanesque church from the 12th or 13th century. The tower, however, is mostly from the 16th century. During World War II the bell was removed, but recovered intact and returned after the war. The gallows-lee, where hangings took place in the 18th century, was to the west of the church. Now the church is used for concerts, exhibits, and weddings.
