Nicolaïkerk or Klaaskerk

Utrecht Netherlands

Protestantse Kerk in Nederland (Reformed)

Church Website

The Nicolaïkerk, one of Utrecht's original four parishes, dates from the 12th century when a Romanesque style church was built. The church was rebuilt in the Gothic style during the 15th century, using parts from the old. At first both towers had tall spires; one was raised for a carillon in 1586 and the other lost in a 1674 tornado. The parish church became monastic when the Carmelites had to relocate. Damaged during the Reformation in 1566, it became Protestant in 1579. Aside from housing soldiers or horses a few times, it is still a Protestant church. It was restored in the 20th century.
