In 2000, the congregation commissiioned four new icons to commemorate the 200th anniversary of Newman's birth, the : Christ, the Virgin, St Nicholas, John the Baptist, and J H Newman (who is commemorated 11 August in the Anglican calendar).

The church was built at the initiative of John Henry Newman, rector from 1836-1845. His words, "May He support us all the day long, till the shades lengthen, and the evening comes, and the busy world is hushed, and the fever of life is over, and our work is done! Then in His mercy may He give us a safe lodging and a holy rest, and peace at the last," were first spoken here, 19 February 1843. John Henry Newman was canonized in Rome, 2019.
