Sint Nicolaaskapel

Nijmegen Netherlands

[Roman Catholic]

The Romanesque chapel, built in 1030, is one of the oldest brick buildings in the Netherlands. Constructed of tuff stone and brick with some Roman tiles, the octagonal inner room surrounded by a polygon with sixteen sides. Between 1155 and 1796 the chapel was within the walls of Valkhof castle (demolished in 1797). It has been enlarged and heightened to serve as an observational tower. The chapel was saved and is now in the Valkkhofpark.
