In 1187 four brothers founded the abbey on Sambre River, forming the community of St Nicolas. Three were priests, the fourth a jeweler. The church was dedicated to Saint Nicolas, patron saint of the Augustinian abbey. The monastery, along with others, was suppressed in 1796, with lands sold becoming public property. Some monks remained until 1808. The cloister was demolished in 1836. Church furnishings went to area parish churches. The building is privately owned and available as a venue.
