Cappella di San Nicola

Foglianise, Campania Italy

Roman Catholic

It is believed that the chapel existed at the beginning of the 1500s, near the public fountain that is still there. The original dedication was to St. James and the chapel was the place where members of the University voted. The 1688 earthquake completely razed the building and it was abolished. In 1694 the priest petitioned to have it rebuilt. The dedication was changed to San Nicola di Bari in 1695. The altar painting and bell tower were restored at that time. A new painting of St. Nicholas receiving the Gospel and the Pallium was installed in 1703, when the chapel and altar were consecrated. The red Vitualanese marble altar with a pure gold canopy is still in the church. The portal was rebuilt in 1760. The last renovation was in 1968.
