The chapel is one of 24 chapels in the basilica. It was commissioned by Nicola Frezza, dedicated to his saint, San Nicola. The basilica is one of the most important monastic complexes in the historic center of Naples. It is here in what was the Chapel of S. NIcola in the ancient Church of S. Michele Arcangelo in Marfisa, later incorporated into this basilica, that the Crucifix spoke to St. Thomas Aquinas, saying, "You wrote well about me Tommaso. What reward do you want?" St. Thomas replied, "Nothing but you, Lord." He then stopped writing his Summa Theologiae. A replica of the Crucifix is in the Chapel of the Crucifix of St. Thomas Aquinas in the Basilica.
