Legend has the monastery founded in the 1100s on the site—the village Verbivka— of a miraculous St Nicholas image appearing on a mound in the woods. Destroyed in the mid-13th century, the monastery was restored on a new site in the early 1500s. The cathedral with five naves was built in 1680. Bolsheviks closed the monastery in 1922 and the cathedral destroyed in the 1920s. The small St Nicholas wooden church in the hermitage, on the site of the miraculous image, was also destroyed in the 1930s. The ruined monastery remnants were returned to the Chernihiv Eparchy in 1999. Monastic life has been restored and with it hopes to restore the Cathedral Church of St Nicholas.
