Staraya Ladoga, Leningrad Oblast Russia
The cathedral, built of Volkhov slabs and bricks, dates from the 15th and 16th centuries. It is 23 meters high, 21 meters long, and 20 meters wide, including the side altar added in the 1700s. Fishermen prayed before the St. Nicholas icon for safety before going to sea. People also came came to pray from surrounding villages. The cathedral was closed in 1938 and the icon disappeared. Restoration is underway.
