Chapel of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker

Kyiv (Mykilska Slobidka) Ukraine

[Ukrainian Orthodox]

The chapel was consecrated in 1867 at the entrance to the Nikolaevsky Chair Bridge. The bridge was built from 1948 to 1853 when it was opened. The chapel was built in front of the bridge. It was square — 7.24 x 7.24 meters. To provide continuous service, a hiermonk and two novices from Pustynno-Nikolsky Monastery were assigned to the chapel; a residence for them was built later. The chapel was connected to the lavra by a staircase of 225 steps. Icons of St. Nicholas and three other saints were installed.

The bridge was the first to cross the Dnieper, bringing people from the left bank into Kyiv. It was blown up in 1920 by retreating as Polish troops in the Polish-Soviet War. REstored and opened again in 1925, it was demolished in 1945 by retreating Soviet troops. The chapel was closed in 1923 and demolished "as it had no historical value" in 1926.
