Church Website

The Cistercian abbey was consecrated in 1137. The abbey was secularized in 1848 following the Sonderbund war. The library and medieval manuscripts were transferred to Fribourg. The building became an agricultural school, then a teacher's college. Monks resettled in 1939 and it became an abbey again in 1973. The buildings and lands, farmed by the monks, are held in a foundation. The monks also house and care for guests. The Gothic St. Nicholas chapel, 1320, following a four-year restoration will once again serve as a place of meditation. Monks will gather there for the 4 am night office. It is a Swiss heritage site of national significance. The entire Hauterive area is part of Swiss heritage sites.
