Chiesa di San Nicola di Bari

Avezzano, Abruzzo Italy

[Roman Catholic]

The church was completely destroyed by an earthquake in 1915. It was also known as the church of Saints Philip and Nicholas. Napoleonic forces plundered the church in the 1800s and it was deconsecrated and closed to worship in 1874. In 1902 it was declared a monumental building worth of preservation. The architrave of the main portal was recovered, sold, and exhibited at the Louvre in Paris. The lateral architrave and parts of the capitals are in the lapidary of the Aia dei Musei in Avezzano.
