Construction began in 2004 as a cooperative effort with both Russian and Ukrainian sponsors. The church was consecrated in 2007 to Saint Nicholas of Myra, the patron saint of sailors. It is open to all visitors. The structure is 60 meters high, with the dome's gilded ball serving as an operating lighthouse, giving a ray of hope to all lost on the sea. The main icon is made of a half million knitted knots, without any silver or gold. It took a year and a half and the man who made the icon was almost completely paralyzed when he started. Doctors had advised him to strengthen his hand by knitting. When the icon was completed he was almost completely healed. The church was built as a memorial to all people who died in the waters. Besides being a church and lighthouse, it is also a museum with a memorial wall and museum of sea disasters in the basement. It is the only lighthouse church in Ukraine and the tallest church in Crimea.
