Church of Agios Nicholaos

Karytaina Greece

Greek Orthodox

The church was built in the 11th century, and expanded in the 1600s. It is under the care of the Hellenic Ministry of Culture, Education and Religious Affairs, 25th Ephorate of Antiquities of Messinia. It is a rare architectural variant of five-domed churches. It is one of the most important post-Byzantine monuments in the region. The narthex on the west is newer. The interior wall paintings are from the 1700s. Urgent restoration of the building began in 2014.
