Church of Agios Nikolaos

Chorefto, Pelion Greece

Greek Orthodox

The church is on the site of the ruins of a Roman temple, most likely to Artemis. Marble fragments are incorporated into the church. It was renovated in 1651. The carved iconostasis and hagiography were funded by wealthy merchant families in Zagora. It was likely the only building Zagora sailors could see from sea. Because the iconostasis and iconography exemplify the early Ottoman period and the specific period the church became a listed historical monument in 1986, 1987. Conservation and restoration of the church was approved in 2024. This work is taking place under all the proper authorities, it has been blessed, and is beingunderwritten by a single donor.
