Kyiv's oldest church, the Church of the Tithes, was built between 988 and 996 on the order of Prince Volodymyr the Great. It was the first stone church in all of Kyvian Rus. It was destroyed in 1240 during the siege of Kyiv. In 1636 the small wooden St. Nicholas church was built on part of the ruins of the Tithe Church, by the order of Kyiv Metropolitan Peter (Mohyla). It was dismantled around 1836 and a new Tithe Church built in its place.
