Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker
Bailovskaya Prison

Baku Azerbaijan

[Russian Orthodox]

In 1893 the prisoners petitioned for a prayer house in the prison. After various schemes were presented and deemed unsuitable, finally adapting a stone building in the courtyard was approved. A priest was appointed in 1897 and laid the foundation stone for expanding the building. The donor for the church provided the iconostasis and all necessary church utensils. The church was consecrated in 1898. Five bells hung under a canopy between two wooden pillars. An iron stove heated the church. The church was one of the first to be closed in 1920. The church was converted into a theater. Both the former church and prison have been demolished.
