Monastery Church of St. Nicholas
[Bernardine Monastery]

Berezhany Ukraine

[Roman Catholic]

The church was begun in 1630 for the monks on St. Nicholas Mountain, where there had previously been a St. Nicholas parish church. The Cossack-Polish war prevented completion. In 1683 the owner of the city signed an act to complete the construction of the church by the Bernardines and to build a monastery there. The church was consecrated in 1720 and the monastery opened. Austrian authorities took the most valuable equipment and in 17978 limited the number of monks. Around 1900 the church was repaired and updated. It was not damaged in World War I. The German occupation closed the monastery in 1942, though the monks returned the next year, leaving finally in 1945. In 1947 the monastery was used for homeless orphans. In 1983-84 a special educational and labor colony was established to be a special vocational school. The colony has served inmates convicted of minor crimes since 1993. The former church became the Greek Catholic Church of the Pratulin Martyrs, with services every morning.
