The monastery Abbey of St. Mary & St. Nicholas, founded in 1180 for Premonstsratensian Canons who came from Pardon, now part of Harlow New Town. The Lord of the Manor of Little Maldon and Sheriff of Essex granted the land. The church had the dual dedication to the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. Nicholas. The abbey closed in 1536 under the Act of Dissolution. Everything of value was taken and sold and the entire church and parts of the abbey were demolished. The chapter house and Calefactory (warming house) remain. The Abbey was a farmhouse in the 18th and 19th centuries and was restored in the early 1900s. The gardens are open a few days a year.
