St. Nicholas Church on the Hill

Sighisoara Romania

Evangelical Lutheran

The church was built from 1345 and continued until 1525 and includes two older constructions: a Romanesque chapel and a dungeon. It is the third largest church in Transylvania. The church was fully painted originally; in 1776 the old paintings were destroyed after exact copies were made on parchment. These copies have been lost. When it was restored in 1934, part of the frescoes were discovered. Complete restoration took place in the 1990s, retaining many significant original features, such as, 15th century carved pulpit and stone font, and 16th century pews.
