Crkva sv Nikola / H'd'r Baba Tekké

Makedonski Brod North Macedonia

Macedonian Orthodox / Sufi Muslim

The church was built between 1914 and 1918 and serves both Christians and Muslims of the Bektashi Order, a branch of Sufi Islam. The shrine was first built as a church in the 14th century, later destroyed by Ottoman Turks. It was rebuilt in the 18th century and again in 1933. The two groups gather together each year to honor St George (or the Translation of the Relics of St Nicholas) on May 5-6, and to honor the memory of Adder Baba, H'era, May 6-7. The church was officially consecrated in 1994 and both a priest and a baba continue to welcome the faithful. As the priest says, "Our origin is from the same creator, therefore we are all the same in front of God no matter what religion we belong to - Muslim, Orthodox or Roman Catholic. We are all the same and the God's mercy is equal for all."
