St. Nicholas Spring

Gilcha Ukraine

There has been a St. Nicholas chapel here since the middle of the 19th century. It has long been a place of pilgrimage because of the twin springs whose clear cold water is considered miraculous. Legend tells when people who were baptized in Kyiv in AD 988 stopped to rest on their return home they say a reflection of St. Nicholas' image in the stream. The water flows from the grotto (the "Holy Cave"). People place lighted candles on the lattice at the edge of the hill. The springs are consecrated four times a year: Epiphany, May 22, July 7, and December 19. People come every day for the healing water; crowds come for the consecrations.
