Iglesia de San Nicolás de Bari

Sinovas / Aranda de Duero Spain

Roman Catholic

The church was built over a period of centuries, beginning in the late 1200s when the Romanesque nave was built. From the 14th to the 15th centuries a tower was built at the foot of the church and a new bell tower replacing the original bell gable. The thick walls and loopholes were for defensive purpose. The church was extended, the roof raised, and the coffered ceiling built. It was again extended and the portico added. Around 1900 the roof collapsed and 2/3s of the coffered ceiling was lost. Ringing the bells all night on All Saints Eve may have caused the collapse. The carved entrance doors and the altarpiece of Santa Ana were also lost. The church was restored between 2009 and 2010, funded by the European Regional Development Fund. The church was declared a National Monument in 1964.
