Zumdorf had 50 residents in 1851 when it was buried by a massive avalanche. The hamlet currently has just three permanent residents in one family; it is known as the smallest village in Switzerland. The small Baroque chapel dates for before the avalanche. The chapel was built in 1591, aligned along the slope because of the avalanche danger.
