The church was Kiel's oldest building, dating from the 1240s. The Gothic church was changed a hundred years later by adding three naves and a long choir. During the Reformation it became Protestant in 1526. The church was remodeled in Gothic Revival style from 1877 to 1884, with a new facade and flatter roof. The 17th century funeral chapels, balconies, and seating were removed. It was badly damaged in World War II and completely demolished because the ruin was unsafe. The church was rebuilt beginning in 1950 with an unpretentious style and modern constructions. It was completed in 1986.
