Kosciol sw. Mikolaja

Papowo Biskupie Poland

Roman Catholic

The church was built around 1300, made of brick made from stone and field stone shavings. A wooden reliquary of St. Nicholas is from the 1400s. In the 1600s a deer-head candlestick was made as a barometer; it is said that hemp cords and hair were woven into the chan, making it rotate towards the high altar when the air was clear and dry; when wet and looking like rain, it looked towards the exit. During World War II the German occupiers damaged the church. The roof and floor were shot through, some windows broken, the facade damaged. Parishioners hid figures and liturgical equipment. Repairs and renovations took place in the 1950s and 60s. The old wooden tower was taken down and the new brick tower built in 2004.
