Small Nicholas Cathedral
St. Nicholas Pustynnyi Monastery

Kyiv Ukraine

[Russian Orthodox]

The church was founded in the 12th century, one of the earliest monasteries in Kyiv. It was originally known as the Pustynnyi Monastery because the location was uninhabited. The original wooden church was replaced by this baroque masonry one in 1715. It became known as Saint Nicholas' Small (Malyi Mykola) Monastery to distinguish it from the nearby Saint Nicholas' Great (Velykyi Mykola) Monastery. When that monastery's "Great Nicholas" was turned into a military cathedral, the monks were transferred to the "Small St. Nicholas Cathedral," known as the Slupskyi or Slup (Pillar) Monastery after the stone St Nicholas built in 1715. The church and the 1874 belfry were demolished in the mid-1930s, making way for a park that was built on the site in 1936-37.
