The church opened in 1878, meeting in the Horlivka mining school. Miners funded a new church that opened in 1905, May 22nd, the Festival of the Transfer of the Relics of St. Nicholas. The church was the main church in Horlivka, with about 4,000 parishioners in 1908. It was closed in 1929; the domes removed and parapets dismantled. The church was then used as a laboratory. German authorities allowed it to reopen in 1941. The community restored the domes in 1942-43; services have been continual since. The church was finally rebuilt in 1969. A second wing was opened in 1980. In 1994 cathedral status was granted.
