Mykolaiv Krupitsky Convent

Verbivka Ukraine

Ukrainian Orthodox

Legend tells that the convent was founded in the 11th century; destroyed round 1250; restored in the early 1500s. The five-nave Church of St Nicholas was built in 1680. The miraculous St Nicholas icon was on the primary iconostasis. The name "Krupitsky" comes from the Mongol-Tatar raid when people hid in the monastery, praying for salvation and food fell from the sky to preserve them. The monastery was plundered in 1708. It was closed under the Soviets in 1922 when the buildings were repeatedly rebuilt; they were badly damaged in World War II. The St Nicholas Cathedral was dismantled in the 1930s. There is still a small Nicholas Church on the slope that was the home to the miraculous St Nicholas icon until 1812.
