The original St Nicholas Cathedral was built of masonry around 1400. When the new St Nicholas Cathedral was completed this church was rededicated to Elijah the Prophet in 1812. It collapsed in 1844. Rebuilt faithfully, though in brick instead of limestone, it was then dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul. Locals still refer to it as the Old Cathedral of Saint Nicholas. Closed in the Soviet period, it was used as a museum beginning in the 1960s and returned to the church in 2003.
