Saint Nicholas Chapel

Etropole Bulgaria

Bulgarian Orthodox

The area used to have Christian cemeteries with a chapel dedicated to Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker. It was destroyed by the Ottoman Turks. A new St. Nicholas Church was built in 1909 and in 1936 the surrounding area was made a park. The church was razed in 1984 to make way for a hotel. After that the city was considered to be cursed. An association was formed to collect funds to build a new church to stop the disasters and accidents in the city. In 2001, near the original site, the new St. Nicholas Chapel was consecrated, restoring the integrity of the Etropolis churches, protecting the city from natural disasters and bad omens.
