Saint Nicholas Church

Vysokopilia / Vysokopylya Ukraine

Ukrainian Orthodox

A wooden church dated back to 1644 and was destroyed during the 1711 Tatar raids. It was restored in 1717. This stone church was built from 1796 to 1806. The roof was covered with iron in 1827. In 1841 there were further repairs and new equipment donated. The stone bell tower was added in 1842. During World War II the Germans used it as a machine gun nest and stable, keeping it intact. During the Soviet time it operated as a country club, a buffet, a cooperative reception center, and as an eight-year school and a kindergarten. The church resumed in 1943. Extensive renovations were carried out at the end of the 1900s when a metal fence was built, water heating installed, a telephone added, and the artistic decoration was completed. It is the only church in district not destroyed by the Bolsheviks.
