The seminary was founded in 1861 as a breakaway from the Neamț Monastery when Church Slavonic was forbidden from worship. Hence the name, "Neamt" meaning "New." The monastery was closed by Soviets in 1962 and the buildings used for a hospital. The monastery reopened as a church in 1989 and a male Romanian language school for priests was established in 1991. With four churches, it is the largest monastery complex in Moldova.
