The church was built from 1809 to 1812 as a parish church. It became a cathedral in 1843. In 1895 it was named the Assumption Cathedral and re-equipped and decorated in 1911. It was closed from the early 1930s until 1944 when services were held in Old Church Slavonic and Ukrainian. In 1963 the church was transferred to a megommeter plant and the plan was to convert it into a club. However, nothing happened and in 1977 the plan was to convert it into a museum of atheism. The roof was rebuilt during the restoration, but the wall paintings were lost. Restoration work began again in 1989, with an iconostasis installed in 1990 and the church was renamed the Cathedral of St. Nicholas. The bell tower was built on the narthex in 1998 and a dome with a cross was installed in 1999.
