St. Nicholas Church

Novocherkassk, Rostov Oblast Russia

[Russian Orthodox]

A wooden Church of St Nicholas was built here in 1810, consecrated in 1812. It was built by parishioners from Cherkassk, who had been forcibly transferred to Novocherkassk. A new white stone church was built from 1821 to 1829 with an attached bell tower. It was closed in 1935 and dismantled. A second St. Nicholas Church was just 300 metres away on the same street; this church was an Old Believers church. It was also destroyed. A wooden cross was placed in memory of the ruined church of St. Nicholas in 1995; it has been replaced by a metal cross.
