A wooden church was built at the beginning of the 1800s near the military hospital. In1819it was taken out of the military and became a parish church, over the years becoming weaker and weaker. In 1840 the money to build a stone church was given. The church also served as the parish school for boys and girls. All valuables were removed from the church in 1922 and the bells removed in 1929. The church was closed from 1932 to 1942, being used as a granary and repair shops. The church was gradually rebuilt following World War II from 1949 to 1954. A hurricane damaged the roof and bell tower in 1969; repairs were immediate. The church regained the designation as a marine cathedral in 2007.
