A brick church was built in the 1820s, consecrated to Ss. Pius and Nicholas. Rebuilt with an added tower, it was reconsecrated as St. Anthony, the cathedral of the newly formed eparchy. Rebuilt and reconsecrated again in 1887 under St. Nicholas. Closed under the Soviets in 1931, it was rebuilt and housed the State Film Distribution with workshops for repairing film equipment and became a children's cinema in 1957. In 1989 Roman Catholics began celebrating Masses in their apartments and later in the cinema, that had been the former church. Part of the building was given to them in 1994 and all of it leased in 2000. Reconstruction of the church began in 2005, supported by Catholics around the world.
