[St. Nicholas Church]
Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary

Banská Stiavnica Slovakia

Roman Catholic

The church was originally built in the early 1200s. It was dedicated to St. Nicholas built by Benedictines and then taken over by Dominicans. It burned in 1806 and was then extensively reconstructed. It is one of the best-preserved Romanesque basilicas in Slovakia, hidden under its classicist facade. It was built a little after the Church of the Virgin Mary that was the parish church. The Marian patronage was transferred to the St. Nicholas Church and the Marian church was not continued.
