The church was built around 1780 or 1805. It was expanded and reconstructed in 1868. Following oppression that began in 1930 the church closed in the 1960s. Bells were removed, the dome and bell tower were demolished. The building was used as warehouses until 1985-86. A church group was formed again in 1989 and the church opened. Initially Liturgy was on the street then in the church as restoration progressed. An iconostasis and choir were installed; bell tower built, domes restored, and floors laid. It is the second largest surviving church in the region. The church was badly damaged by Russian shelling in October 2025.
