The chapel is in Camp Gilbert Johnson, a satellite camp of Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune. An Orthodox priest has served the chapel for more than thirty years. The camp was originally named Montford Point and was a recruit depot for black recruits, training 20,000 African Americans between 1942 and 1949. In 1974 it was renamed in honor of one of the first African Americans to enlist in the US Marine Corps. Hurricane Florence damaged the chapel and services have since been held at Camp Lejeune.
