Vielle église Saint-Nicolas

Saint André / Champ-Borne Réunion

[Roman Catholic]

The church was built in 1847 and damaged numerous times before being totally destroyed, beyond reconstruction, by hurricane Jennie in 1962. It was positioned so the church building bore the brunt of high winds and hurricanes coming off the Indian Ocean. Damaged and restored in 1857 and 1863. A cyclone tore off the roof in 1881; repairs also expanded the church. The walls threatened to collapse in 1904 and the church was closed. A cyclone in 1905 caused the building to collapse. It was rebuilt in just 15 days, reopening in 1907. The high winds of Hurricane Jennie in 1962 damaged the church beyond repair as it destroyed many homes and took the lives of 37 people.
