St Nicholas Church

Loughton, Essex England UK

[Church of England]

Loughton's original parish church, St Nicholas, was built in the 16th century; the 1946 St Nicholas Memorial Chapel is on the site today. The church was close to Loughton Hall which burned in 1835. The vestry decided to demolish the church for the value of the materials, expecting them to bring 250 GBP to build a new church in the village a mile away. However, the sale brought only 80 pounds and a medieval church was lost, except for the chancel. The rest was razed when the new church was built in 1877. All that remains is an outline of the foundation and some gravestone slabs.
