Pilgrimage to the Cathedral and St. Nicholas Exhibit
Bishop Jeffrey Lee and St. Nicholas will welcome the youth of the Diocese of Chicago for a day of wonder and amazement on Sunday December 14 at St. James Cathedral. Our young people will explore the amazing St. Nicholas exhibit curated by Carol Myers, founder of the St. Nicholas Center in Holland, Mich. The traveling exhibit, making its debut here, includes pieces from Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Russia, Ukraine, Turkey and the USA.
The exhibit explores the life of Nicholas, born about AD 260 in Patara, in what is now Turkey. He was Bishop of Myra until his death, December 6, AD 342, which is celebrated as St. Nicholas Day in many parts of the world. Nicholas is the patron saint of children and sailors, and is closely associated with Greece, Italy, Russia and the Netherlands. St. Nicholas traditions are growing in English-speaking parts of the world. The exhibit looks at the stories and legends that have been passed from generation to generation, and his place within faith traditions and international customs. With hands-on children's activities, the exhibit is festive, fun and educational.
