Hundreds of years ago, a Christian named Nicholas showed his love and care for one poor family by giving them gifts of money. He didn't want thanks or a big fuss, so he gave the money secretly, by throwing it through a window!

Some Christians celebrate the feast of Saint Nicholas on his special day—6 December—by giving secret gifts then. Others celebrate the giving of secret gifts on Christmas night.
