Saint Nicholas: Swiss Textiles

Dorfkirche St. Nikolaus, Reinach, Switzerland

The St. Nicholas story shown in nine textile wall hangings is from the Roman Catholic Church of St. Nicholas in Reinach, Switzerland. They were designed to complement the music of Britten's Sankt Nikolaus Cantata, performed in Basel and Reinach in 1984. Inspired by the stained glass in medieval churches, two diploma classes of the Gymnasium Münchenstein designed and made the textiles. The nine 135 x 500 cm panels illustrate the nine movements of the cantata. Made for the concerts, they were used on the LP record album cover and now belong to the village St. Nicholas Church in Reinach.
